The Homeless Book Club

Book club participants with Anne Fadiman, author of "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down"

Our Homeless Book Clubs are more than a place for homeless men and women to discuss their favorite books; they are a place for people from widely different backgrounds to find common ground. The Homeless Book Club concept is the first of its kind, and it was founded in 2007 by our outreach nurse as a means to develop relationships of trust between clinicians and patients.

Discussing books with group members builds a support network for our patients, while allowing us to integrates health literacy messaging into meaningful conversations about relevant, interesting stories that often have strong emotional ties for the participants. The book club environment is extremely therapeutic for participants by providing a safe, confidential arena in which to discuss life experiences and emotions paralleled with those exhibited by the characters in the books.

We have been overwhelmed by the community support we receive for the Homeless Book Club. If you would like to support this unique program, view a list of books our participants are requesting.
